Paddling for the Sub Veteran title

FOURWAYS - Fourways resident Serge van Hee partnered up with Roodepoort resident Shaun Maphanga to battle for the sub veteran title in their annual nine miler (14.48km) trek around Rietvlei's Dam in Centurion on 25 July.

Van Hee and Maphanga, both with similar skills and speed levels, unfortunately lost by a mere three seconds to Centurion club paddlers and had to settle for second place in a time of 01:23:08.

The pair are last year’s Gauteng K2 Sub Veteran title winners, which they were awarded in March this year.

Despite a burst of thunder, lightning and rain, as well as hail bucketing down on the paddlers as they prepared to begin their annual trek around the dam, the skies cleared and within the first few laps, paddlers were removing beanies, scarves and gloves as they warmed up.

With no wind, the dam water was mirror smooth and the sun greeted the paddlers as they finished their tough competition which annually kick-starts the serious season training where paddlers prepare for their major A Grade events, which take place after winter.
