Diepsloot cyclists get a boost from Toyota

BRYANSTON - THE Diepsloot Mountain Bike Academy received a major boost from Toyota Supercyling Club.

The academy comprises mainly teenagers from the impoverished Diepsloot township.

The Toyota motor company donated an omnibus and modern mountain bikes to the academy during a glitzy ceremony in Bryanston.

Darryl Egdes, managing director of Morecorp, a Toyota subsidiary company that manages the Cycle Lab and the Toyota SuperCycling Club, said their objective was to promote cycling among the members of the community.

“Growing access to cycling and increasing participation is more than just selling bicycles – it’s about improving the lives of all South Africans,” he added.

“The partnership will assist in developing future participants, role players and leaders in the cycling business, as well as our country, and we are privileged to make this contribution together with the club’s partners.”

The academy was founded in 2006 and is the flagship programme of the Jala Peo Foundation which aims to identify and develop talented young riders to compete at club, provincial and national level.

Andre Ross of the foundation said the partnership with Toyota would go a long way to improve the lives of youth in the Diepsloot community.

Some of the academy members were already competing in the cross-country Olympic and cross-country marathon disciplines of mountain biking.
