Down on his luck but still determined

BRYANSTON - Broken bones and torn ligaments will not spoil City Lodge employee Henri Joubert's dream of completing the joBerg2c mountain bike event.

Joubert is the international business development manager for the City Lodge Hotel Group at their head office in Bryanston.

At the end of January, Joubert fractured his heel and tore the ligaments in one of his ankles, making his chances of competing in this year’s gruelling 900-kilometre joBerg2c from 24 April to 2 May slim to none. If his luck wasn’t bad enough, Joubert then fell into a hole while trying to get his crutches out of the backseat of his car, tearing the ligaments in his other ankle.

For most people that would have put paid to the idea of competing in a mountain bike race, but Joubert tried to retain as much of his fitness as possible and kept his dream of competing in his second consecutive joBerg2c alive.

Six weeks after his initial injury Joubert started weight-bearing on the foot with the fractured heel. “Because I could walk, I thought I could cycle too,” he said.

“Amazingly, I had kept my fitness and after riding just over 300 kilometres in the first two weekends of April, I decided to enter this year’s joBerg2c and give it my best shot.”

Joubert is currently participating in the challenge and is flying the flag for the hotel group in its 30th anniversary year.
