Winds blow favourably at Cedarwood

GLENFERNESS – Pupils at Cedarwood School continue to excel in a number of pursuits proven by various recent successes in everything from sport to academics.

When it comes to achieving a goal, Grade 5 pupil Joshua Richardson does it with no holds barred and has been exceeding himself as the school’s swimming superstar.

“He dreams of swimming in the Olympics one day and he is well on his way to achieving this goal,” said Dawn Schmitz, spokesperson for the school. “He recently swam in the Wahoo Night Gala and received first place for freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke.”

Adding to the impressive list of achievers, are Grade 2 pupils Liam Pursey, Brandon Sachs and Robbie van Heerden, who attended the Champion of Champions Judo competition held at Wits University on 21 February.

“In the beginners Yellow Belt section, Brandon won a silver medal and Liam received the bronze,” a proud Schmitz continued. “In the ranking competition, Robbie won a silver medal. Robbie has also been selected to represent Gauteng Central in the Masakhane Judo Tournament.”

Grade 6 pupils at the school meanwhile exercised their brain muscles to come up with mathematical solutions to kite flying during the windy summer days currently being experienced in Fourways.

“Building and flying a kite is a wonderful hobby and a good way to learn about shapes, air, wind and flight,” said Schmitz.

Each child had to make sure that their kite was sturdy and had recognisable characters painted on it, which had to include at least six recognisable 2D shapes. Lastly, they had to be able to name at least four properties of each geometric shape.

“They were assessed by their peers and each child had a turn to fly their own kite and answer a few questions about their project and experience,” Schmitz concluded.
