Dainfern to host golf prodigies

FOURWAYS - Dainfern College aims to put schoolgirl and schoolboy golf on the map with the National College Golf Championship.

The championship has been hosted by Dainfern College since 2000 and is the most sought-after high school golf tournament in the country.

In the last 10 years of the tournament, close to 60 schools from all over South Africa and Zimbabwe have competed and the long-term aim is to take the tournament globally and have schools from all over the world participate. The format of the tournament means players from smaller schools are able to compete head to head with players from larger schools. The format also allows both boys and girls to compete equally, and in the last two years two girls have been in the top four.

One of the aims of the tournament is to give each golfer a taste of what it feels like to be on a pro tour. Many of the golfers who have previously played in the tournament have gone on to play in pro tours. Some of the players include Anton Haig, Josh Cunliffe, Matthew Carvell and Brandon Stone.

There have also been many golfers from the Ernie Els Foundation who have played in the tournament, the most recent being Dainfern College pupil David Myers who also has his national colours in golf.

Apart from Dainfern College, other schools participating in the championship this year include Strand High School, St John’s College, St John’s College Harare, Clifton College, Bishops, Pecanwood College, Kearsney College, KES, St Stithian’s College and Parktown Boys’ High.

A vital part of the championship is the yearly inclusion of a development team comprising of golfers from underprivileged backgrounds.

The National College Golf Championship will take place at the Dainfern Country Club from 15 to 17 March.
