Bicycles bring hope

DAINFERN - More than 75 children participated in the Qhubeka Bike race held at the Dainfern Fun Day.

Qhubeka is the World Bicycle Relief’s programme in South Africa. World Bicycle Relief is a US-based non-profit organisation dedicated to transforming individuals and communities through the power of bicycles. Since 2005, the organisation has trained more than 1 100 field mechanics and provided more than 170 000 specially designed, locally assembled quality bicycles to disaster survivors, healthcare workers, students and entrepreneurs in developing countries.

Proceeds from the Qhubeka Bike race went towards funding Qhubeka’s Bicycle Education Empowerment Programme. The programme provides bicycles for children to use to ride to school in areas where there is no or limited public transport. In return for a bicycle, the schoolchildren sign a contract for two years committing them to increase their school attendance and marks. If they achieve this within the two years they get to keep the bicycle. The day raised more than R10 000 for Qhubeka.
