Taekwon-Do team are tops

FOURWAYS - Team Taekwon-Do South Africa competed in the International Taekwon-Do Federation's 2014 World Championships and Colour Belt World Cup in Rome.

Team Taekwon-Do South Africa consisted of members of the Magua Taekwon-Do clubs in Emmarentia, Olivedale, Rivonia, Bryanston, Edenvale and Malvern East. Norman Magua, president of Taekwon-Do South Africa said in his 20 years of practising Taekwon-Do and having experienced world and international tournaments over that time, he used to believe that South African Taekwon-Do practitioners were small fish in a huge pond.

However, based on the results of the recent championships, some team members were victorious over countries he could only have dreamed South Africa could hold their own against. Magua explained that in the black belt divisions, no one from the team had ever proceeded past the first round in a sparring division, yet in the championships the team made a massive leap. All of their adult competitors proceeded to the next round and many to the quarter-finals.

“It was inspiring to see our up and coming colour belts perform so admirably, also breaking all records for our organisation in the colour belt divisions, showing our future is looking bright,” Magua said. “We might be small fish in a big pond, the only difference now is that our small fish are growing some big teeth.”
