Bringing Mixed Martial Arts to the masses

SUNNINGHILL - Fight Fit Militia is a gym for the community which specialises in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

Operating from the lower level of Sunninghill Mall, the gym was established in 2008 and is now considered the largest gym of it’s kind in South Africa.

The gym was founded by two accomplished EFC fighters, Richard Quan and Norman ‘Chef’ Wessels.

“The idea behind the gym was to create a community where people come first before thinking of revenue,” said Wessels.

In the beginning they struggled with the negative stigma surrounding MMA. Wessels said, “When we started, MMA and other combat sports like Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai were seen as un-cool, but through the medium of Mixed Martial Arts we have been able to diversify the sport with kids classes and people coming here for body conditioning.”

The gym now runs structured children classes for little ones from four years old. This forges a MMA culture from a young age.

The gym also holds diverse training programmes such as gymnastics for basic body conditioning and Iron Athletics, and it has a traditional gym where people can work out.

Quan said, “We didn’t want the gym to be based only on MMA, but rather diversifying it by letting people benefit from training here.”
