Dainfern’s triathlon superstar

DAINFERN- Dainfern resident Jaryd Brown (19) is burning up the triathlon circuit.

This year, Brown achieved his Central Gauteng triathlon colours, and in November he was placed second at the African Championship, as well as first at the Global 11 competition in Sun City.

Brown is currently completing a higher certificate in business principles and practice at Varsity College, Sandton, where he was offered a scholarship. He serves as the college’s triathlon sports captain. Brown explained that in this role he promotes triathlon as a lifestyle sport.

However, Brown has been accepted by the University of Pretoria for 2014 to study for a B.Sc in sports science. Brown said, “Sports science is something I have a particular passion for and I have also been training with Lindsey Parry, who is the head sports scientist at the University of Pretoria Institute for Sports Research.”

In 2010 Brown was a member of the 16 Toyota SuperCycling Team and in 2011 he received his Central Gauteng colours for both triathlon and duathlon. In 2012 he took a break from the competitive circuit to focus on his matric exams, which he was writing at Dainfern College.

Having already achieved so much in the field of triathlons, Brown has set his sights on a number of future achievements.

He explained that his long-term goals were to compete in the Hy-Vee World Championships and in the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, both in the US, as well as to eventually be selected to take part in the 2020 Olympic Games.

Next up on Brown’s racing itinerary is a triathlon in Mauritius in December. In 2014 he will compete in the South African Triathlon Championships, and, if selected, he will represent South Africa in the 2014 Triathlon Championships in Canada. Brown has also earned an invitation to compete in the 5150 Triathlon in the US next year.
