How to create a truly humane society

Klarika Nettleson writes a letter explaining that in order to make society more humane, we must work from the bottom up to the top.

Klarika (Nomsa) Nettleton of the Bloubosrand Community Forum and Bloubosrand Animal Welfare Group writes:

Dearest friends and kind supporters, may I greet you from my heart and thank you for all your consistent help.

Michael Tarr did send me a nice delivery of goods for the animals on Mandela Day, which was joyfully received.

May I recommend to everybody to read Madiba’s autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, which is an eye-opener in all directions. Believe me, I find it difficult to put down.

CAGED CRUELTY: Chickens are sold in small cages often without food or water.
CAGED CRUELTY: Chickens are sold in small cages often without food or water.

In order to create a humane society in South Africa, we need to start right at the bottom where suffering is the greatest. For example, all factory farming and chicken battery farming should have been stopped long ago – in fact, it should have never started. Only free-range animal products should be available.

I belong to a worldwide pressure group to bring it about in all countries. Chickens, who do not lay enough eggs anymore, are sold alive in cramped cages, often without food, water and shelter. These chickens are in hell throughout all their lives, just look at them! I am watching these chickens being slaughtered in the presence of children. I also see youngsters buying chickens and treating them in an inhumane manner. What kind of a society are we raising?

I am happy to say that many residents in informal settlements told me to remove these cages, but I do not have the legal power to do so. I am in constant touch with our authorities to bring about lasting changes on all fronts. But we all need to stand united, because divided we fall and have no power whatsoever.

Please drop racism as it does not make any sense.

I recently was able to attend two large meetings arranged by the Gauteng government and the City of Joburg respectively and held in different informal settlements. I was even permitted to speak briefly in one of the meetings. The atmosphere was positive and improvements all round are on the cards.

I know that everything takes a bit too long to come to pass, but I ask everybody to pray and be of good cheer.

Kindly help with pet food, tick and flea products.

Also, clothing for children and adults in need are gratefully accepted.

Love and kindest regards, Klarika (Nomsa) 011 462 1445; klarika@telkomsa.net
