‘Dismissive of the problems local residents encounter on a daily basis’

Phil Smith writes:

I refer to the front page story, Inevitable irritant, week ending 29 January about traffic volumes due to development and progress.

I find it incredulous that the likes of Bertha Peters-Scheepers of the Johannesburg Roads Agency and David Potter, the local DA councillor can be so dismissive of the problems local residents encounter on a daily basis.

Clearly neither of them would have been so flippant in their remarks if they had been stuck in the nightmare gridlock that was Fourways on 29 and 30 January.

The vast majority of traffic lights were out and there was no sign of any pointsmen whatsoever.

This is the crux of the problem. There is no foresight or joined up thinking between the roads agency, the local councillors and the Metro police.

Further, if Potter was serving the local community, as he should, he ought to be active in petitioning that the roads agency facilitate traffic flow in and around Main Road.

For example, Main Road’s junction with Bryanston Drive where, despite more than five new office developments going up in the past 18 months, nothing whatsoever has been done to this key junction with regards to creating filter lanes from St Michael’s Road for traffic turning left onto Main Road from Sandton and from Main Road onto Bryanston Drive.
