Prison inmate addresses cop killings through poetry

SUNNINGHILL - Isaac Mbilini, an inmate at Leeuwkop Prison, raises key issues plaguing society regarding crime.

He writes:

In the line of duty

In the line of duty, that’s where they have fallen.

Today we mourn the death of our men and women in blue, a sad situation.

The grave, a cruel as it is, swallowed the most dedicated and hardworking police officers.

All who died violently in the hands of criminals.

As they are mowed down like this, what will happen to the service they used to bring communities?

The murder of a police officer, a gap that is costly to the nation.

They breathed their last in the line of duty, leaving behind broken hearts with questions why.

They were the breadwinners, taking care of their families they left behind.

Orphans and widows, who depend on them.

Sadly the day they left for work, their families never knew it was the last time they would see them alive.

However, instead of arriving back home, sad news arrived, that they are no more.

They left without saying goodbye.

What does this mean to you and me? We are vulnerable to crime.

Who will now be brave enough to confront crime like they did?

When they are killed by the very society they are serving.

Where does this leave us, in this crime-ridden country?

We will remember their bravery, their commitment and dedication in the South African Police Service, but the truth still remains, we have lost because of crime.

May their souls rest in peace, because they died in the line of duty.
