Community pays but gets nothing in return

Di Franzsen writes: I think it’s great when the community stands together but what is happening is that ‘the communities’ pay their rates and taxes (or else), get nothing in return.

The letter ‘Community very concerned’ (week ending 6 March) was altered and did not represent the full views of resident Di Franzsen who submitted a letter. Here is the original letter submitted by Franzsen to Fourways Review:

I think it’s great when the community stands together but what is happening is that ‘the communities’ pay their rates and taxes (or else), get nothing in return, are then forced to get together to try and fix things themselves like potholes, security problems, maintain parks that are just left at a further cost to them (like the LRA [Lonehill Residents Association] in Lonehill) and the government sits back and does even less (if that’s possible) – other than put up our rates and taxes every year!! Why should ‘the community’ have to club together to put up a fence where clearly there is a security hazard – it’s simply ridiculous!! Come on, President Zuma and Co – do your job and use our rates and taxes wisely for goodness sake!! Where is this all going to end !? (other than at Nkandla)
