Shameful Excuse

Isaac Mbilini, an inmate at Leeuwkop Prison, writes: I'm sitting and wondering what excuses are still remaining in our way of life.

Every day we hear about individuals who go through a lot.

Recently, I saw a boy on the news who’s about 18 years old. At night he is a caregiver, by day he is a student. He has no choice but to do whatever seems right to help himself through the challenging situation he’s up against because there are no parents to ask anything from, it’s only him and his siblings.

What I ask myself is that despite the challenges against him, he builds no monument about all this, but yet where I’m sitting right now behind bars, I’ve heard so many excuses. Honestly, I’m not exonerating myself either, but it breaks my heart to see ordinary people, who have it tough in their lives but never opt for shortcuts. I came to realise that many seek shame, wanting others to pay their dues in life. No one has it easy in life, to be where they are.

So people must come to realise that it’s not about what happens to you, but it’s about how you think, react and perceive yourself in the situation that matters and what you learn from it. If we realised this, then we wouldn’t be sitting behind bars seeing young girls becoming prostitutes. The only solution, from my point of view, is to face the reality that our way of life is full of shameful excuses.
