Recently a very well-presented man going by the name of Jonathan, came to our gate in Paulshof and offered his services as an irrigation and borehole specialist.

As we needed someone at the time, we spent time walking around the garden with him, and he appeared very knowledgeable about what we needed and how to do the necessary. He then sat down with us and prepared a hand-written quote with company details.

As the quote was reasonable, we decided to give him the work and paid him a 50 percent deposit so that he could buy the required equipment and return to do the work the next day.

Needless to say, that was the last we saw of him even though I did call him a few times.

Although we were naively trusting and didn’t try to call his supposed references, it saddened me significantly that he would do this, as it puts such a bad light on small businesses trying to get a start.

We were willing to support him, but this experience has left a very bad taste in our mouths.
