Community involvement is key

The IHS Index Report, which was released late last month, stated that crime in South Africa was at its lowest level in 15 years.

The report also suggested that crime in Johannesburg was 10 percent lower than in Cape Town.

This may have come as a shock to some residents, who believe Joburg is the ‘crime capital’ of South Africa, but it is nice to know that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

Looking at the report, one can’t help but wonder what has changed and why Johburg is improving. Is it our police who are working harder and making sure criminals end up behind bars, or is it the community members, who have taken on a second job, patrolling their areas and holding police accountable?

This paper/website applauds all community members who have played their part in lowering these statistics. It is wonderful to see community policing within Joburg. To residents who have full-time jobs, but still take time out of their busy schedules to volunteer at the police station, clean a pavement and get involved in their suburbs: well done, thank you and please keep up the hard work.

For those residents who are not involved, please consider those people who are working hard at improving your suburb. Without these silent heroes, the beautiful suburbs in Joburg would not exist. Those residents who have not contributed to their community, who do not know their neighbours and who do not attend community meetings and events – you are missing out. The greater community of Joburg North is amazing and, as the past has shown, when working together, a difference can been made.

Introduce yourself to your neighbour, you never know when you’ll need them. Take a chance and attend that community meeting you saw being advertised – the meeting might just be worth your while.

Last but not least, please get to know your ward councillor – they are the lifeline of your area and with them, all things are possible.
