Where are the Metro police?

The lack of enthusiasm shown by members of the Metro police has become a huge issue for some Johannesburg North wards.

At a recent Joburg 10Plus meeting, the absence of the Metro police was felt by all. This prompted ward councillor Anette Deppe to comment that many of the issues raised at these meetings needed either input or feedback from the Metro police. Their absence meant these matters remained unresolved.

The Metro polices’ apathy could be detrimental to the success of the Joburg 10Plus initiative.

Another issue which should be of concern to Metro police is illegal dumping. Yet time and time again, one reads about residents catching illegal dumpers in the act, but were powerless to do anything because Metro police could not be reached or were to slow to react.

Metro police have far more powers than police when dealing with illegal dumpers. Metro police have the authority to issue bigger fines to offenders and can impound the vehicle. Therefore, the police should stick to catching robbers and murderers and Metro police should fulfil one of its mandates by clamping down on this scourge.

While it is understandable that this is probably a few rotten eggs and not the entire Metro police department, the consequence of its inaction is having a ripple effect.

Come on Metro police – show us what you are made of.
