Unity College welcomes back existing and new learners

Unity College is a special needs school where pupils learn not only academic work but practical life skills too.

Unity College opened its doors to new and old learners of their school on January 10.

With much anticipation, the teachers were so happy to welcome the pupils into the school for the new year with classes starting immediately.

Principal Jeanine Kerr said welcoming learners brings much joy to members of staff. “It takes a unique type of person to teach in the special needs field and we are proud of our passionate teachers who always welcome the learners with open arms.”

Already thinking of the future is Mthi Khalema on his first day of school.

“Seeing happy, smiling children and young adults bouncing off our busses or spilling in from their parents’ cars, so eager to see their friends and teachers again was heartwarming.”

The teachers planned welcome activities and learners were soon busy. “Our senior phase pupils welcomed the learners who were new to the phase with motivational speeches, friendliness, and warmth.”

Happy to be back are the intermediate phase class with class assistant, Seazwe Matlou.

The school’s new centre for life and vocational skills has welcomed its first learners. This centre is aimed at bridging the gap between the classroom and the adult world by offering basic vocational skills aimed at equipping students with skills for independent living.
