Local Samaritan Gail Koeberg, known as Mama Gail, has embarked on a mission to ensure that those facing hardship in her neighbourhood are cared for and nourished.

With over 19 years of experience in community empowerment projects, Koeberg has dedicated her life to uplifting the less fortunate, and her efforts have made a significant impact in the Magaliessig community.

Mama Gail’s centre serves as a safe haven for destitute and abused women, children, and men, with the primary aim of rehabilitation and restoration. By providing practical skills training, she empowers individuals to reintegrate into society as responsible contributors.

“I can identify and relate to where destitute people find themselves, as I have also experienced abuse and rejection in my life,” she shares, underscoring her connection to the struggles faced by those she helps.

Her diverse skill set – ranging from counselling and administration to cooking, baking, and even knitting – enhances the support she offers to those in need. Over the past few months, Mama Gail’s presence in the community has grown, as she tirelessly works to feed people on the streets and raise awareness about the vital services offered at her centre.

Not only does her bakery produce delicious bread and baked goods that sustain her centre, it also helps to feed those in need outside of its walls. “I have been restored through the love of God and can now be used to restore others with that same love which enabled and restored me.”

Her faith drives her mission, reminding us of the power of compassion in action. “I’ve learnt that God always gives a mandate or vision which is greater than your means or capabilities.”

It is inspiring to know that amidst the challenges facing our communities, there are individuals like Mama Gail who step up to care for others. Her selflessness and unwavering commitment remind the community of the positive impact one person can have.
