ICYMI: Schools round-up: A look at what’s happening in our local classrooms

A weekly round-up of school-related activities around Fourways

The schools in and around Fourways have been bustling with activity lately, with learners taking on leadership roles, embarking on bonding camps, learning important life skills, and showcasing their talents in sports tournaments.

At Curro Douglasdale, Grade 7 learners Danielle Scaaf and Tanaka Mukaronda were recently appointed as part of the learners’ representative council. The duo expressed their excitement and pride in being able to lead and make a positive impact on their school community. Scaaf shared her ambitions of instilling Curro values in younger learners, while Mukaronda looks forward to implementing a drama club for fellow drama enthusiasts.

Over at Crawford International Lonehill, Grade 10 learners had an unforgettable experience at Sugar Bay during their bonding camp. The school’s client experience officer, Robyn Swanepoel, highlighted the enriching experience that the camp provided, fostering personal development and team building among the learners. The American-style camp allowed students to customise their adventure and explore a variety of activities, leaving them with lasting memories and newfound confidence.

Meanwhile, Cedarwood School focused on teaching learners how to take care of babies, emphasising the importance of baby safety and proper care techniques. The learners, guided by teacher Retha Kok, enthusiastically learned how to hold and support babies, with some already excelling in their caregiving skills. The hands-on lesson left a positive impact on the learners, who eagerly shared their newfound knowledge with their families.

Fourways Crossing Shopping Centre also made a difference by renovating the kitchen at Witkoppen Primary School as part of their ‘Celebrating Future Leaders’ campaign. The initiative aimed to support the school’s feeding scheme and provide essential cookware and utensils to ensure that learners have access to nutritious meals. The school’s kitchen staff expressed their gratitude for the assistance, which will make meal preparations easier and more efficient.

Lastly, Dainfern College hosted The Fern Tennis Tournament 2024, welcoming teams from various schools for exciting singles and doubles matches. The tournament showcased the talent of young sports enthusiasts, with Dainfern College’s A team clinching the gold in the girls’ competition and Redhill School emerging victorious in the boys’ competition. Exceptional players, such as Diana Hendrik and Cristiano Nicoletti, were recognised for their outstanding performances during the tournament.
