Singer uses voice to give back

Gary March did not wish to let his passion die out when he retired from showbiz, instead, he uses it as a way to give back to his community in Fourways.

After 40 years of singing his heart out on stage, Gary March decided to take his craft to another level and do it for a good cause. The 70-year-old didn’t want to retire with his talent but instead chose to use it to deliver electrifying performances at charity and fundraising events in the community.

He said the idea was inspired by the pandemic as it hit many people very hard. “I love it when I see people gathered in one space and all in the name of giving back. We have been stressed by a lot of negative things recently, like crime, corruption, load-shedding during chilly weather, etc. So, when I come through with music, people get to forget a bit about their problems and enjoy themselves.”

But he is also the type of person who wears his heart on his sleeve. “I have done really well for myself, and I saw what people have been through, so I thought ‘let me give back with my voice to any events organised for the benefit of others’.”

March is originally from the United Kingdom and came to South Africa in 1976 because of a two-year work-related contract. He said after the contract came to an end, he did not wish to return to the United Kingdom.

“That’s because I fell in love with this country because of its people. They have so much respect and a beautiful culture. I felt at home from the first time I landed so I never looked back.”

He said he has always been a singer at heart. He began his singing career at a young age with some of the songs that he got to perform at the time; including Irish music.

March added that since he made it known to his community in Fourways that he gives back with his voice at charity events, he has been booked and busy.

“After I posted what I do in the community group chat many people flooded my inbox and asked me to perform at their events. I am so happy that I will be doing what I love in front of people who are extending helping hands to the needy. For those who want me to come and perform at their fundraising and charity events, they can call me on 082 555 4939.”
