Suspected hit-and-run leaves mom desperate for answers

Early hours of July 22, Saturday morning left an 18-year-old lying down on the corner of Witkoppen and Church Street, in Douglasdale, after a suspected hit-and-run incident.

A mother’s worst nightmare came true on July 22, when she received a call from a local government hospital, stating that her 18-year old son was in a serious condition, following an incident earlier on that morning.

“He has a cracked skull, bleeding on the brain and a broken foot. He has tons and tons of bruising, blue eyes, and scratches all over,” said the emotional mother, who wished not to be named in order to keep her son’s identity private.

The young man was found injured on the corner of Witkoppen Road and Church Street in Douglasdale during the early hours of the morning, following what his mother suspects to be a hit-and-run incident.

According to the mother, the teenager was on his way home from a night out with friends when an unknown motorist struck him and fled the scene.

The incident took place at a busy intersection that is typically frequented by both pedestrians and vehicles. It remains unclear at this time whether the teenager was crossing the street or walking along the road when the incident occurred.

The mother of the young man said, the suspected hit-and-run incident is estimated to have occurred at around 03:20 but she only found out around 10:00 – more than seven hours later. “I got a phone call from Helen Joseph Hospital at about 10:00 on Saturday morning, to say that he (son) was an emergency and that he had been delivered by ambulance to Helen Joseph at 5:00 in the morning.”

Struggling to understand exactly what happened, the mother posted online in an attempt to get information, in order to open a police case.

Nobody at this stage has come forward with information that could assist the distressed mother to get the answers she needs about the alleged hit-and-run.

“I have to get a form (J88) from his doctor, his neurosurgeon, stating his injuries, before I can open a case,” she told Fourways Reveiw.

Members of the public are encouraged to come forward with information if they might have heard or seen anything about how the teenager ended up lying on the corner of Witkoppen Road and Church Street, with injuries.

Community Policing Forum (CPF) Exco chairperson Lizzy Mabena said, “As the Douglasdale CPF we have reached out to the mother of the victim, and we have engaged with her to check on the health of the victim and how he is doing. The mother has given out thes status on his health. He is still in hospital and in a stable condition. The mother did say that the victim has no recollection of the incident currently.

“The CPF has engaged with our partners in the community to try and obtain CCTV footage from around the close scene – close in vicinity to the scene so that we can provide more information to the Douglasdale Police Station upon the victim’s mother going to the police and opening the case. The footage can assist the police further in the investigation and prosecution of the perpetrator should the footage prove that the victim was indeed hurt during the criminal activities.”

Mabena added that the Douglasdale CPF will follow up with the victim’s mother and keep close contact with her and the victim. “We will ensure that he recovers safely and returns home in good health. We will follow up and support the mother in opening a case with the Douglasdale police for further investigation and we will provide any evidence that’s related to the case to the police to support them with the investigation.”
