Fourways school tests their ability to make a hearty meal in load-shedding conditions
Loadshedding was the theme of this year’s HeronBridge Cook-Off for the current Grade 11 group.
A local school hosted its annual cook-off in collaboration with the Guvon Academy challenge that had a particular cooking twist.
The Life Orientation team at HeronBridge College put together a ‘Cooking in Load-shedding’ challenge for the Grade 11 participants and had them utilise tools such as a snappy chef hob and barrel braais as their source of heat.
Head of the Department of life orientation at the school, Ali Bennett said the learners were challenged with the difficulty of having no electricity, time constraints, and limited equipment and a pantry of items.
“This year’s groups had a mystery box of a steak, cranberries, walnuts, and beetroot to feature in their main dish along with a mocktail to compliment these ingredients,” she said.

“[The restraints] encouraged time management, planning in a team and also dealing with last minute changes and the art of ‘making a plan’. It’s exciting to see the students deal with real-life problems and come out the other side with a dish they were proud of.”
The learners taking part in the cook-off had to serve their dishes and drinks to an array of judges. Among the panel were guest judges, and local community radio presenters Greg Aldridge and Lucky du Plessis who host the weekday breakfast show on StarFM.
The UnBEETables team was declared this year’s HeronBridge Cook-Off winner.
