Run/Walk for Life Fourways gets athletes pursuing their marathon goals

Run/Walk for Life Fourways runners got their running shoes on to achieve and complete different marathon distances over the space of a week.

Members of The Run/Walk for Life Fourways recently took part in the club’s annual Progressive Marathon event that saw several runners reach new milestones in their running careers.

The week-long challenge saw members also participating nationally and there were also remote entries from Spain, Namibia, Zimbabwe and the United States.

The manager of the Fourways branch Beth Hamman explained what the progressive marathon entailed and why members became involved.

Nadine Knight, Michelle Pinheiro, Michelle Rix and Celeste Kruger give a thumbs for the Run/Walk for Life Progressive Marathon challenge.

“It is a challenge that gives people an opportunity to run or walk a distance that they never thought possible, over six consecutive days. This year the participants could choose from one of the following distances – 9km, 21km, 30km, 42km, 56km or 90km,” she said.

In Fourways, there were 33 participants and one walker did 90km, walking 15km per day for six days straight. The majority of participants entered the 42km that saw them walk or run 7km per day.

With national Run/Walk for Life events taking place every quarter, Hamman said it had been encouraging to ‘see life returning to normal post-Covid and to see members back walking and running again’.

Bronwyn Hemer and Trish Willis are ready to take part in the Run/Walk for Life Progressive Marathon challenge at the Fourways branch.

“Matthew Grossett, the CEO of Run Walk for Life has been quoted as saying ‘the Progressive Marathon is the essence of what Run Walk for Life is all about – nothing is unachievable, and in the right environment anyone will be able to achieve their fitness goals’.”
