Paulshof residents encouraged to report dysfunctional water hydrants in the area

Local resident has called on Johannesburg Water to help fix dysfunctional water hydrants in Paulshof.

Paulshof resident, Lita Jacobsen has accused the City of Johannesburg and their local councillor for their failure to fix dysfunctional water hydrants in the area.

She claimed that the majority of water hydrants in the area have not been fixed or serviced and that was evident when two homes in the area recently burned down.

“No one has responded to our request to address and fix the fire hydrants in Ward 93 and specifically in Paulshof. How many veld fires must we have, and homes burned down until the city addresses these issues,” she said.

“We are now despondent and can no longer tolerate the continuous poor service delivery to us as ratepayers. We had two houses gutted by fires last year and earlier this year. Firefighters had a problem accessing water because the water hydrants were not working.”

Ward 93 councillor, Vino Reddy conceded that some water hydrants have not been serviced because Johannesburg Water was under-resourced.

“There is no tangible plan in place to monitor and service water hydrants. I’ve previously raised the matter with the City. In most cases, you will find that one fire hydrant is working and the other is not working.”

He added that some water hydrants were buried by soil underground and some were not marked.

The Fourways Review contacted Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) spokesperson, Robert Mlaudzi for comment, however, Mluadzi directed the paper to Johannesburg Water, as he said the water hydrants were the responsibility of Joburg Water. The spokesperson at Johannesburg Water, Puleng Mopeli urged residents to report water hydrants that were not working. “We would like the complainant to be more precise in terms of street names and provide contact details as well as previously reported incidents and reference numbers so we can zoom into this issue.”
