Serious and Violent Crime and K9 units arrest suspected ATM bombers in Fourways

Three suspects believed to be ATM bombers were arrested at a petrol station in Fourways.

Gauteng police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo said the police will remain resolute in preventing, combatting and investigating serious and violent crime in a concerted effort to create a safe and secure environment for all.

This was after detectives of the Serious and Violent Crime (SVC) unit along with the Johannesburg K9 unit members arrested three suspects in Fourways on charges that include possession of explosives, unlicensed firearms and ammunition on October 11.

Masondo said a preliminary report suggests police followed up on information regarding the whereabouts of suspects possibly linked to the ATM bombing incidents.

“While driving along William Nicol Drive in Fourways the members identified the suspects’ vehicles at a local filling station. Shortly after the members intercepted the suspects’ vehicles to search, but one suspect fled on foot and managed to evade arrest.”

“A search led the members to recover various explosive-related items such as gel tubes, shock tube assemblies and electrical shock tube starters. Police also recovered breaking implements, two unlicensed firearms with their serial numbers filed off and ammunition.”

He said the suspects were expected to appear before the magistrate’s court in due course.

Masondo urged community members to report the crime to their nearest police station, SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or leave an anonymous tip-off on the MySAPS App.
