According to Daphney Teffo, marketing manager at Kyalami Corner, the partnership was a natural fit, driven by a shared passion for environmental preservation. The cleanup was also in commemoration of World Clean Up Day.

She said they collectively rallied community members, resident associations, schools, and like-minded individuals to ensure a well co-ordinated effort.

“Each organization leveraged its networks to gather volunteers, provide necessary resources, and promote the event, ensuring a well co-ordinated effort to maximize participation and impact.”

The cleanup event saw a diverse group of volunteers, ranging from young children to senior citizens, come together to make a tangible impact.

“Volunteers from local communities and surrounding areas participated, demonstrating the power of community-led initiatives.”

The collected waste painted a stark picture of pollution’s pervasive presence. Plastic and glass bottles, polystyrene, household items, and general litter were among the most common items collected, though unexpected finds included car parts, tyres, and broken furniture.

“When it comes to pollution, nothing surprises us anymore. We have found items like doors, car parts, tyres, nappies, and synthetic hair. Additionally, some larger, unexpected items like broken furniture were found along the riverbank.”

Teffo said this successful event marks the beginning of a long-term commitment to environmental sustainability.

“We are committed to continuing this partnership for future environmental initiatives. Given the success of this cleanup, we look forward to hosting these cleanups monthly, and collaborating on more projects that contribute to the wellbeing of the local ecosystem and encourage ongoing community involvement.”

To sustain community interest, she said Kyalami Corner will organise educational workshops and regular cleanups.

“We’ll continue collaborating with local organizations to ensure consistent engagement. Collecting over 80 bags of waste represents a significant stride in our efforts. We have collected more during previous cleanups. This highlights the ongoing need for sustained efforts to reduce waste pollution.”

Kyalami Corner, and its partners, are forging ahead, dedicated to environmental preservation and inspiring a cleaner, greener future.

“We will soon be launching our new initiative, the Sustainable Trendsetters Movement, which encompasses working with various schools and aims to foster a culture of sustainability and environmental awareness within our communities. We are currently focused on the Jukskei River which is a high-impact area around Kyalami and Midrand, encouraging even broader community involvement to create a lasting environmental impact.”
