Golden Lions Youth Rugby Teams brave KZN weather and rake in medals

The Golden Lions Youth Rugby IPT teams arrived back in Johannesburg after a thrilling week of rugby in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Golden Lions Youth Rugby IPT teams returned home on September 30, bringing with them invaluable experience and unforgettable memories from their week-long tour in KwaZulu-Natal.

The journey began on an unexpected note, as snowfall swept through KZN, forcing the team to take a detour via Bergville. However, this sudden change of plans also came with a unique opportunity for the young Lions to witness breathtaking snow-covered landscapes and engage in an impromptu snowball fight.

For many of these budding rugby stars, this was their first encounter with snow, and the thrill was palpable.

U16 Boys win gold.

The team’s Lee Rachstein said despite the challenges, including navigating unpredictable weather ranging from gale-force winds to sunny days, the Lions teams adapted and embraced the experience.

“For some players, it was also their first time away from home and their first chance to swim in the sea.”

Heather Dolley, chairperson of the Golden Lions Youth Rugby, was floating on cloud nine over the teams efforts.

“These 176 players came together and showed everyone what it means to play in a Lions jersey. We might not have won all the golds, but as a union, we certainly won the week.”

Dolley extended her heartfelt thanks to the managers, coaches, and chaperones who gave up time with their families to support the players on this adventure.

After the final whistle – these are the results:

• U13 Lions – Fourth overall
• U14 Lions – Silver
• U15 Lions – Gold, and undefeated throughout the tournament
• U16 Lions – Gold
• U18 Lions – Bronze
• U16 Girls – Gold
• U18 Girls – Gold
