JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla advised that if you come across individuals experiencing homelessness in your local park, there are effective steps you can take to report the situation and contribute to a solution.

Contact the City of Johannesburg

“The first action you should take is to reach out to the City of Johannesburg’s 24-Hour Call Centre. You can call them at 011 375 5911 or 5918. When you call, be prepared to provide specific details about the location and the circumstances surrounding the situation. This information is crucial for the authorities to address the issue appropriately.”

Inform your local ward councillor

“Another avenue for support is your local ward councillor and community policing forum, which may also provide resources and solutions tailored to address community concerns.”

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla.

In case of emergency, contact SAPS

“If you witness activities that pose immediate safety concerns or appear to be criminal, do not hesitate to contact the South African Police Service (SAPS) by dialling 10111, or visiting your nearest police station to file a report in person.”

Engage with local NGOs

“Collaborating with local non-governmental organisations and community groups that support homeless individuals can significantly help. These organisations often have the resources to assist those in need, from providing shelter to connecting individuals with vital services.
“Addressing the challenges of homelessness and squatting in Johannesburg requires a collective effort from residents, local authorities, and community organisations. By reporting issues promptly and taking proactive steps, you can help facilitate a supportive environment for all individuals in our city.”
