Step 1: Gather Evidence

“Before reporting [corruption], collecting as much evidence as possible is essential. This information will help support your claim and ensure a thorough investigation,” he said.
Consider documenting the following:

  • Names of the officers: Identify the officers involved, if possible.
  • Date and time: Note when the incident occurred to establish a timeline.
  • Location: Record where the incident took place; this could be vital for the investigation.
  • Witnesses: Gather the names and contact details of any witnesses who can corroborate your account.
  • Media evidence: If available, capture photos, videos, or audio recordings of the incident. This documentation can be crucial in illustrating your claims.

Step 2: Report the Incident

“Once you have organised your evidence, it’s time to report the incident. You can do this through the JMPD Anti-Fraud and Corruption Hotline.” Here are your options:

  • Phone: Call the JMPD Anti-Fraud and Corruption Hotline at 080 020 3712.
  • In-Person: Visit the JMPD Internal Affairs Unit located at Village Main Road and Loveday Street, Wemmer.
  • WhatsApp: Use the dedicated WhatsApp line at 063 253 1928 to report any inappropriate acts by JMPD officials.

When drawing up your report, provide a detailed description of the incident using the evidence you’ve gathered. Clear and concise information will assist investigators in addressing your concerns promptly.

Step 3: Submit a written statement

“In some cases, you may be asked to provide a written statement or affidavit. This document should encompass all details of the incident, along with any supporting evidence you collected. Be as thorough as possible; a well-documented statement can significantly aid in the investigation.”

Step 4: Follow up on your complaint

“After reporting the incident, it’s essential to follow up to ensure that your complaint is being addressed. You can contact the JMPD Anti-Fraud and Corruption Hotline again to request updates on the status of your report. Persistence can be key in ensuring that your concerns are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.”

Step 5: Escalate if necessary

“If you feel your complaint is not being handled appropriately by the JMPD, you have the right to escalate the matter. In this case, you can report the incident to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

“This independent body is responsible for overseeing police conduct and can help ensure that your concerns are addressed fairly.”
