Ever since then, show jumping has had a special place in Caitlyn’s heart. “I enjoy the adrenalin rush, especially after the ride. Completing the courses to the best of my ability and getting the best from my pony is the best part.”

This keeps her motivated and engaged and Caitlyn thrives on the challenges of improving her skills. A significant contribution to her growth comes from her coach. “My coach, Claudia Graunke, is always there to support me and help me improve. She brings out the best in me, and my pony, and encourages me to push myself.”

Balancing school and riding is a commitment for Caitlyn. A typical day involves attending school in the morning, completing her homework, and then heading straight to the stables. “I ride till about 17:00 or later, so I spend an average of about three hours a day around horses.” This dedication allows her to develop her skills while remaining committed to her education.

Caitlyn’s ambitions extend beyond her current achievements. “I would love to compete in the Olympics one day for South Africa. Next year, I would also love to win the Bronze FEI tour. I’m also excited to start competing on horses next year because I will be turning 12, so won’t ride ponies. That will be a new challenge.”

Her partner in these thrilling competitions is her pony, Flinda, whom she won the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) Blue Tour with. “Flinda has a great personality, and sometimes she can be pretty feisty. We have just started gelling together now after nearly a year of working together. She has the fattest belly, but she is fast and always gives me her very best.”

Caitlyn is not just an aspiring show jumper, she is a young girl with dreams, a passion for horses, and the determination to succeed.
