City officials advise pensioners to apply for property rebates

Local councillors urge residents to take advantage of the property rebate application opened by the city.

Ward councillors from Fourways are encouraging pensioners, aged 60 and above, to apply for property pensioner rebates opened by the city. These rebates are designed to provide financial relief for elderly citizens facing economic challenges.

These rebates are available to pensioners who own residential properties, allowing them to alleviate some of their property-related expenses.

Kgamanyane Maphologela, director of customer communication for the City of Johannesburg, said, “we acknowledge the significant contributions made by pensioners aged 70 and above by providing them with a rebate without the need for income verification.

“If a pensioner meets all other requirements but their property’s value exceeds the threshold, they will still receive a rebate for the property value they qualify for. Pensioners must understand the importance of applying for these rebates, as they provide essential financial relief.”

Ward 94 councillor David Foley said, “pensioners can download the application form from the city’s official website. Once completed, the form, along with the necessary supporting documents, can be submitted to the nearby customer service centre.”

Current recipients of pensioner rebates need to know that they do not need to reapply for these benefits, the city is specifically reaching out to potential new applicants.

“The pensioner’s rebate is not automatic. An application must be done on the prescribed application form. The pensioner rebate application forms must be submitted and a reference number must be obtained,” advised Ward 106 councillor Chris Santana.

Ward 115 councillor Mark Van der Merwe, also advised pensioners to reach out to their ward councillors for help with the application if having trouble. “I have had about 20 pensioners whose applications were taking longer than expected. I have assisted all of them to receive their rebates and they are all backdated to the date they submitted their application.”
