Road safety in spotlight after fatal collision in Douglasdale

Authorities appealed to eyewitnesses of the incident which claimed the life of a biker to come forward with information for the investigation.

A recent fatal motorcycle collision in Douglasdale has raised concerns about the reckless driving habits of some motorcyclists who often seem to believe that their smaller vehicles exempt them from following the rules of the road.

The tragic consequences of such behavior are all too real, as seen in the collision that claimed a life at the intersection of Douglas Drive and Leslie Avenue in Douglasdale.

As the community mourns the loss of a life, and the authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, the Fourways community flocked to the comment sections of the community groups to remind each other that road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and that no vehicle is too small to be exempt from the rules.

Prince Moyo, another motorist, said that while he acknowledges that usually motorcycle drivers often face pressure to make timely deliveries to impatient customers, it doesn’t justify their disregard for traffic rules.

“We should also be understanding as customers when it comes to our orders because when we become impatient the bike drivers fear being rated low and losing tips or even being reported.”

Superintendent Xolani Fihla, spokesperson for the JMPD, said they responded to the scene, where a white Toyota Etios and a black Piaggio Aprilia motorcycle had collided in Douglasdale.

“The motorcycle rider sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. The occupants of the Toyota Etios, both female, escaped the accident unharmed.”

He said, according to eyewitnesses, the Toyota Etios was exiting a petrol station when it collided with the motorcycle. The rider lost control and subsequently collided with a concrete dustbin on the sidewalk.

A case of culpable homicide has been opened, and the matter is currently under investigation by the Douglasdale SAPS.

Fihla said they appeal with witnesses to contact them on 082 467 9490. “The Hillbrow Mortuary is currently holding the body of the deceased, pending identification and funeral arrangements.”
