Mauritz uses pedal strokes to bring the change he needs in the community

Mauritz van den Heever has been cycling his whole life, but it wasn't until 2018 that he started participating in events to manage stress and prioritise his mental and physical health.

As the sun risen over the rolling hills, Mauritz van den Heever geared up for another gruelling training session with his eyes fixed on the ultimate goal —the Glacier Storms River Traverse.

This intermediate adventure race pushed him to his limits to cover 160+ km over three days and 2 600m of elevation gain. But Van den Heever wasn’t just riding for personal glory; he was riding for a purpose.

His passion for cycling is evident in every word.

“We identify communities, groups and other organisations that we can support and link up with in order to have the most impact possible. Using an event to raise funds for causes shows who some of the people are and personalises the experience of donating.”

For Van den Heever, this purpose is Con Brio, a charity founded by his wife Elindi to support various branches of care in Fourways and its surrounding communities.

Van den Heever’s journey began in 2018, when he started participating in cycling events to manage stress and prioritise his mental and physical health.

“Training for an event starts three months prior, and it’s a combination of gym, indoor training, and hitting the trails.

“I’m grateful for the support of my crew at Crossfit Urban Shack Randburg.”

With his dad by his side and the knowledge that he’s raising funds for important outcomes, Van den Heever said he has the right amount of motivation to push through the tough cycling times.

The Glacier Storms River Traverse will be Van den Heever’s biggest challenge yet, but he’s ready for it.

“The elevation gain will be the bigger challenge, but I’ve been training specifically for this.”

He said he is very confident that he will cycle till the end and break records.

“Small improvements compound into success,” he added while also reflecting on his journey so far.

But Van den Heever story is not just about personal achievement – it’s about inspiring others to make a difference.

“Anyone can contribute to those in need and make a difference in their communities. Don’t take your health for granted. Start small and build on continuous gains. Do events and use them to create ‘gees’ and energy around raising funds for causes, while having some fun.”

As Van den Heever pedals towards the finish line, he’ll be thinking of the impact he’s making. He explained the mission of Con Brio.

“Every donation counts, and every pedal stroke brings us closer to making a difference.”

With his determination and dedication, Van den Heever is an inspiration to others. His story shows that anyone can make a difference, no matter how small it may seem. Support him and Con Brio by donating by dialing 082 942 7161.

He hopes that his journey will inspire others to make a difference in their own community.

“Remember, every small action compounds into success, and every pedal stroke can change lives.”
