The Starfish Greathearts Foundation gears up for the 67 Minutes of Mandela day by hosting an event at Design Quarter in order to raise funds and get donations.

In commemoration of Mandela Day, the Starfish Greathearts Foundation hosted an event to give back to the community and make a difference in the lives of vulnerable children.

The organisation, dedicated to supporting orphaned and vulnerable children in South Africa since 2001, aligned with Nelson Mandela’s values to give back on July 18 by hosting an event at Design Quarter, Fourways to collect donations for their charity work.

“Many of our team members have personal stories of how Nelson Mandela’s legacy has impacted their lives and inspired them to contribute to their communities. For instance, one of our volunteers shared how participating in previous Mandela Day events helped them realise the power of community action and the difference one person can make.

“[Mandela’s] legacy of resilience, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice continues to inspire people globally. His belief in the power of individual and collective action encourages people to take responsibility for their communities and work towards creating a better world for all.”

She said, the day will encompass a wide range of activities, ranging from the inauguration of a community-centred organization, to hands-on service initiatives, like renovating a local centre, New Horizons in Thembisa.

The goal of these activities is to actively involve individuals of all age groups, and emphasise the significance of contributing to the community.

“We aim to mobilise the community to take action and make a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable children. By fostering a sense of unity and collective effort, we hope to inspire ongoing support and volunteerism beyond Mandela Day.”

Skosana added that those who are unable to attend can still support the cause. “We also encourage people to become monthly donors, or sponsor a child, to ensure ongoing support for our programmes.”

She acknowledges the support of partners, sponsors, and volunteers, including ABSA and Roering Creative Kin (Pty) Limited, who have contributed to making the event possible.

Building on the momentum of the day, the organisation’s Mphilo Skosana said they aim to continue to raise funds for their programmes, which provide nutrition, educational support, healthcare services, and social services to vulnerable children.
