During the operation, police officers visited liquor outlets and second-hand goods dealers to ensure compliance with relevant regulations. They also set up vehicle checkpoints, issuing traffic fines to errant drivers.

Additionally, the team targeted illegal dumping sites, issuing fines to those responsible for environmental pollution, said Captain Mpho Tshetlhane, from Douglasdale police station.

The operation follows others that were led by General Max Masha for the Douglasdale police station earlier in the year.

Brigadier Veeshani Arikum, commander of the station said at the time. “We started the year with a bang and putting feet on the ground. We are working with the community – as you can see there are a lot of community members, the CPF’s Patrollers in Blue working with us. The whole idea of the operation is to work with the community to reduce crime in Dougladale and also go out to the community to win their trust.”

Since its inception on May 8 on the provincial level, 55 675 suspects were arrested for various crimes ranging from murder, to rape, to possession of illegal firearms.

The operation consists of regular stop and searches, roadblocks, vehicle check points, high visibility patrols, including foot patrols, the tracing of wanted suspects with a focus on murder and rape suspects, as well as compliance inspections at liquor outlets and second-hand good dealers.

The initial inception of the operation was led by the former Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele and the Deputy Minister of Police, Cassel Mathale.

“Don’t be kind. When criminals go hard on you, go harder! When criminals go toe to toe, let’s not be the ones to lose this war. We can’t afford to pick up dead bodies of police officers. Criminals in South Africa think they have extra rights, go out there and prove them wrong” Cele said to the police at the inception.

The Douglasdale police appreciate the support of all role players who contributed to the success of Operation Shanela, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for the community.
