Fourways paddlers shine in action

Fourways canoeists shine at South African Canoe Marathon Championships.

Fourways paddlers participated in the South African Canoe Marathon Championships from June 14-16 at Roodeplaat Dam.
Hosted by the Gauteng Canoe Union, the event attracted a large contingent of paddlers from across the province.
The championships served as a selection process for the national team to represent South Africa at the International Canoe Marathon events in Metkovic, Croatia, scheduled for September 19-22.

It featured a range of age groups, from U8 to Great Grandmasters (Over 60, 70, and 80 years), with paddlers showcasing their skills in various events, including the 10km dash race and the longer 20km marathon event.
The marathon required paddlers to navigate a short portage section, testing their efficiency in getting in and out of the water smoothly and quickly.
Among the standout performances were those from the local paddlers, including young Ruwan Jayakody from Magaliessig, who achieved fourth place at the Gauteng Canoe Union Championships and sixth position in the national event.

Alexia Smedmor from Jukskei Park impressed in the U16 girls’ single kayak race, finishing fourth and securing third position in the doubles event with partner Emily Langley from Pretoria.

In the older age categories, Claude Graham from Paulshof dominated the Sub Great Grand Master (65-69 years) category, taking first place. Gunther Grune completed the men’s short course dash race as 2nd Sub Grand Master and partnered with Richard Cook to secure first position in their age group.

The Gauteng Canoe Union also hosted its provincial championships from June 1-2 at Roodeplaat Dam, where paddlers were selected to represent the province at the national event. With such an impressive display of talent, it’s no wonder many of these paddlers will likely make a strong impact at international competitions.
