Owl release at Cedar Lake

The residents of Cedar Lake came together to participate in a unique conservation effort, an owl release programme.

On May 16, Cedar Lake hosted an owl release programme organised by EcoSolutions, a non-profit organisation that aims to educate people about the importance and benefits of owls while debunking the myths surrounding these creatures.

Sara Orchardson, representative of Owlproject.org and the owl release programme’s facilitator explained the day’s purpose.

“This programme is part of Owlproject.org,” she said. “We are dedicated to promoting owl conservation and control of the rodent population. As part of this initiative, juvenile owls are released into their natural habitat, providing them with a second chance at life.”

The released owls, which were carefully placed in a special release pen built by residents near the clubhouse, were juvenile owls that had been taken care of by EcoSolutions and volunteers.

The facilitator emphasised the importance of releasing owls as close to their original habitat as possible, increasing their chances of survival. “Releasing owls far away from where they were found can be detrimental to their survival, as they may try to return to their original habitat and may not make it back alive.”

Residents also witnessed the owls being ringed by Arjen van Zwieten of the organisation.

EcoSolutions has been involved in various educational and owl release programmes at schools and eco-estates around Gauteng. “By working together with local communities and schools, we aim to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of these fascinating creatures.”
