Fourways Road Runners club shines at the 2024 Comrades Marathon

Fourways Road Runners members show their strength at the Comrades Marathon, with impressive performance and a strong team presence.

Members of Fourways Road Runners participated in an unforgettable 2024 Comrades Marathon, held in KZN between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

The 88-kilometre ultramarathon, considered the world’s largest and oldest, is a tiring test of endurance that requires months of rigorous training.

“To prepare for this demanding event, Fourways Road Runners typically start training in August or November of the previous year. As a club, they host informal long runs throughout the year to support their members in their training and provide fuelling at three support tables along the race route” said club secretary Brittany Halton-Hall.

This year’s race was an up run, with runners starting in Durban and finishing in Pietermaritzburg. The Fourways Road Runners had a remarkable showing, with an impressive 91 entrants, 78 starters, and 77 finishers.

The club’s medal count was also noteworthy, with five silver medals won by Bill Rowan, Robert Mtshali, and Vic Clapham. Additionally, 15 members won bronze medals, including Vic Clapham.

Among the standout performers were Ziningi Ndlovu, who finished in a time of 08:00:33, Angela Blake in a time of 09:04:16, and Debbie Ivinsh in a time of 09:20:33. On the men’s side, Steve Bendall took the top spot in a time of 06:45:25, followed by Godfrey Moabelo in a time of 07:13:56, and Richard McCafferty in a time of 07:15:59.

The club also had an impressive showing from its novice runners, with all 11 novices completing the grueling course. The top three newbies were Godfrey Moabelo, Sarah Thornsson, and Kayla Sanders.

One notable achievement was Peter Kiskey-Green, a local Fourways Gardens resident who finished his 23rd Comrades Marathon.
