Edustreams asks for donations to finish building the kitchen

The kitchen already has it's walls up. It needs roofing and equipment inside.

Edustreams Vocational School is asking for donations to help them build a hospitality kitchen where their learners can get the skills to use in professional workplaces. The founder of the school, Wendy Roux who has contributed along with her husband said they would love to do more to help the learners with special needs obtain skills that help them in workplaces, but they need help.

The school is currently using a smaller kitchen and with more children being enrolled, the school would love to grow its facility and accommodate more learners. According to a parent of a learner who goes to the facility, Helen Jennings, the school is growing daily. “My son has been attending at this school for the past three years and it has been amazing. He is so good at braaing. My friends always want him to braai when they come over to our home. Even with school braai, they ask him to. He likes to season food and is always eager to try new spices. He loves hot and spicy food and is now growing his own chillies at home using his skills learnt in agriculture. I want that for more children in the school.”

“As a newly established school the current kitchen facilities cannot cope with the number of students nor offer the full scope of equipment that students need to be exposed to follow this career. As a mother of a child with learning challenges and having attended other remedial schools that did not cater to my son’s needs, it is so great to finally have a school that fully understands children with learning challenges and offers them the ability to learn a skill that will enable them to live a self-sufficient life in the future.”

Roux is hoping to raise three million which will cover the roofing and equipment inside the building. “I just hope we can finish the building soon because we would like our children to all have the same experience in hospitality and create an environment that will help the learners with their skills in the kitchen” She is hoping to get donations from anyone who believes in upskilling the youth. “The school offers skills that will prepare the learners for workplace environments. Children with special needs struggle to get jobs but we have partnered with SA chefs to increase the chances of these children being employed.”

Roux started the school because she could not find a school that caters to her daughter’s needs in the area of Fourways. “I was looking for a school that would cater to the needs of a special child in vocational education and I couldn’t, so I started the school.” She is hoping to get as much help as she can. “All donations are appreciated. Including kitchen equipment.” If you would like to donate, contact Roux at 0833269422 or email her at wendyroux@edustreams.co.za.
