Estate rolls up sleeves to clean up spaces

Fourways Gardens Residential Estate feels proud to have done a good job at cleaning up.

Fourways Gardens Residential Estate spearheaded a massive clean-up of Uranium Road and the Uranium Park. The estate invited various stakeholders to join in the cleaning spree.

This is after they obtained permission to erect a fence around the open area to prevent vagrants from moving in, dumping, and littering as measures to also curb crime. It was clear to those involved that the area was in desperate need of tidying up.

The estate’s operations manager, Rudy de Venter requested City Parks, the City of Johannesburg, and Ward 94 councillor, David Foley to assist.

Resident liaison and communications manager Elaine Clarke said the estate’s garden management team, Turfnet, and a private entrepreneur, Isaac Greefiners Mnguni, all offered to get involved in the project. The 24–7 Security Services offered to make additional officers available to safeguard all workers and did a sweep of the park with their K9 tactical team.

“The footpath on Uranium Road was cleared of overgrown shrubbery and the footpath hidden under mud uncovered. This will allow safe pedestrian traffic on this busy road in the future. The project extended from Winnie Mandela Drive past the Fourways Gardens Shopping Centre,” Clarke added.

“Every person in attendance was thrilled with the project’s outcome and all agreed the ease with which it can be done if a community works together. City Parks Region A’s regional manager Dr Joseph Ndou also inspected the vacant land and a servitude area that was discovered was cleaned and made easily accessible as a major water pipe runs through the same area – thereby ensuring Johannesburg Water can access the area with the necessary trucks and equipment to expedite repairs. On behalf of the community, we extend our thanks to all the role players.”

Foley said this is the second time the team is doing this. He said they even discovered a walkway outside the Witkoppen Park covered with a lot of soil.

“I always like to show my support and enthusiasm when the community and businesses step up to improve the area. I must say Ward 94 has very committed residents that are willing to do what must be done to ensure property values are maintained by having clean and litter-free roads.”
