Douglasdale police and other law enforcement reap the success of crime prevention operations.

Douglasdale police together with other law enforcement agencies launched crime prevention operations that saw 25 suspects being arrested. The operations were conducted from February 2, until February 4, throughout the area.

The suspects were arrested for different crimes ranging from murder, house robbery, contravention of the South African Schools Act of 1996, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, assault common, dealing in liquor without licence, drinking in public, and shoplifting.

The police started with a school compliance operation which was held on February 2, where two suspects were arrested for opening and operating unregistered schools. They closed four schools due to non-compliance.

In another operation that was held on February 4, six suspects aged between 20 and 34 were arrested for a double-murder incident that took place on February 3, at Pipeline, Kya Sand informal settlement.

Dougladale Police Station commander Brigadier Veeshani Arikum said they are adamant with police visibility this year during Operation Shanela that was held on January 18, where 76 illegal immigrants were arrested.

“We started the year with a bang and putting feet on the ground. We are working with the community – as you can see there are a lot of community members, the CPF’s Patrollers in Blue working with us. The whole idea of the operation is to work with the community to reduce crime in Dougladale and also go out to the community to win their trust.

“Kya Sand is our main and problematic area when it comes to crime. It is usually domestic violence and illegal selling of liquor that contribute to domestic violence. But we are working tirelessly to deal with it,” she said at the time.

Arikum added, “We applaud the hard work and dedication of the police members and other law enforcement agencies for making sure that the community of Douglasdale is and feels safe. Community members are also encouraged to keep on reporting criminal activities in our area by phoning Douglasdale police on
