Pikitup urges residents not to illegally dump bulk waste

Items like fridges, machienes, an old mattress and so forth can be picked up by Pickitup.

Pikitup has started to collect bulk waste to reduce and prevent illegal dumping.

The illegal dumping by residents of items especially on pavements or verges is unsafe for pedestrians and possibly motorists.

Items dumped in public parks and shared green spaces are something the city is actively trying to combat.

“Pikitup is reminding residents that they do not have to dump these items. They can simply leave them for Pikitup to collect. The service is free so we would appreciate it if residents complied,” said spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi.

Old and unwanted household items like mattresses, washing machines, old furniture, fridges, and so on are all able to be removed.

“This initiative comes from past experience where large items like these were difficult for residents to transport to the correct depots so we are here to assist them.”

The JMPD said they are aware of this initiative and fully endorse the removal of bulk waste to avoid illegal dumping sites. “Although the JMPD has never come across or received reports of dumping obstructing the roadway, people usually dump illegally on the verge of the road or in open spaces,” said the spokesperson, Xolani Fihla.

While pleased that this removal option is available, when discussing smaller waste or rubbish, Lonehill resident Cheryl Klein says, “We are trying to remove waste and clean up the area. We wish informal waste reclaimers and recyclers could respect that and not make a mess when they are finished digging in bins on rubbish collection days.”

Residents who would like to dispose of bulky items from their households are urged to contact the Midrand or Randburg depots depending on which one is the closest.

Pikitup can arrange a free once-a-month pick up of the waste per household.
