EMS team ends search for driver swept by flash floods

It has been days since the aquatic team began searching for a driver who was swept away by flash floods in Sunninghill.

For almost two weeks, the City of Johannesburg EMS Aquatic Team has been on an immersive search for a driver who was swept away by flash floods on Witkoppen and Rivonia roads in Sunninghill – without any sign of her.

EMS media liaison officer Xolile Khumalo said they decided to end the search for the driver on January 22. “We embarked on an extensive search and rescue operation with the support from SAPS, ZASRA, GPG, National Rescue South Africa and Gauteng traffic police. It lasted for nine days and the body was not recovered during this period.”

She added, “After at least five days in water, the body of a drowned person is expected to surface. If it does not surface, it is suspected that the body is immersed in sand or debris. The worst case scenario could be that the body floated to a nearby river that is outside Johannesburg’s jurisdiction.”

Khumalo said EMS has requested the neighbouring municipality to be on the lookout for the body, “We have since handed the case to police to continue the investigation.”

According to reports, an eyewitness reported to Douglasdale police that he had seen the woman’s car being swept into the Juskei River after she drove through a pool of water following flash floods on January 12.

The car was found in a terrible state, however, the driver was not in it.

“Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to the family during this time. And we would like to take this opportunity to thank all entities who supported the operation. And the community who showed us love by providing refreshments and food. Phambili Spirit of Ubuntu! We thank you,” said Khumalo.
