Diwali Festival lights up the Fourways’ sky

It was beautiful yet spiritual day for many Hindu families in Fourways as they celebrated Diwali Festival 2023.

Many of the Hindu homes in Fourways lit up the night sky on November 12 – to celebrate the festival of lights more commonly called Diwali. Its significance according to the author of Covid-19 Chronicles, Rajinee Govender is to triumph over evil forces that were destroyed years ago.

She said during the day, families unite, pray, and share a lot of sweetmeats and eats that were prepared for that day. She was one of the residents in Sunninghill who made sure to light up the sky with fireworks.

“Being with family and sharing this occasion is something that I look forward to on a yearly basis. How often do we really take the time to spend with friends and family, in this rat race called life? Another showstopper for me is the adorning of new attire and jewellery that befits a queen. The lavish compliments that are thrown my way and to others that look even better are enough to make me feel renowned and like royalty. I have already thought about my outfit for next year.”

She told us that fireworks also play a huge role in the events of the day. “The magical display of fireworks serves not only to light up one’s homes and path but also culminates in the unity and high spirit that befits a celebration. This for me is the one of highlights of the day,” she explained. “Many people also deliver parcels of food to the poor. This is done to uplift others and to give back to the community. This kind gesture highlights the “Spirit of Ubuntu” that is prevalent amongst people everywhere.”

Another Fourways resident, Nasheel Dayal had it lit. He said what made Diwali more special for him was that he spent the day with his family in Fourways. He tells us a bit of history on how the holiday came about.

“It was fun celebrating light over darkness. The day commemorates King Rama’s return to Ayodhya with Maa Sita after spending 14 years in exile and defeating the King of Lanka, Ravana. Diwali is one of my favourite prayers and celebrations as there is so much love, colour, light, and sweets all around.”
