Cedarwood learners visit an old aged home

The learners enjoyed engaging with the elderly.

Cedarwood School learners visited Frederic Place Home for the Elderly as their way of giving back to the community by helping vulnerable pupils within the community.

The learners made the elderly happy by donating hot chocolate.

The Grade 11 learners were very excited to serve them tea and donated hot chocolate. As a way of entertaining them, the learners performed a play for them. They also played board games with the elderly.

According to one of the teachers who went to the home, Hani Rahimi, the school is privileged to be part of the organisation’s amazing work. “We were able to spend quality time with them and see the different parts of the organisation. Educating us on the different levels of vulnerability within our elderly,” she said. She further elaborated on how the children enjoyed it. “I think it gave them a lot of perspective into reaching out to different people that need help. We always think babies and animals need the most help, forgetting our elderly. It was an eye-opening opportunity, and we are very grateful,” she added.

The learners loved listening to the elderly’s stories and picking a thing or two to apply in their everyday lives.

Another teacher, Thulile Gambushe, was so happy that the learners were given this opportunity. “We love such trips and programmes because this shows our elderly that we still care for them. It is amazing to work with them,” she said. The learners enjoyed the trip and wish they could do it more often. “This made me miss my grandmother. I have to go home and visit her soon,” said one of the learners Kgahliso Moreosele.

Hani Rahimi made a new friend and they promised to exchange hair tips.
