Food tower to be built for the needy

Jaci Tibbit is appealing for help to gather non-perishable foods for the annual Power Towers Food Drive.

With the ever-rising cost of living and challenging economic climate, there is no doubt that hunger strikes many households in the country. However, the premier design and homeware destination in Fourways, Design Quarter, is boldly saying ‘not under my watch’ as they are geared up to assist by urging customers to donate non-perishable foods.

This is for their annual Power Towers Food Drive which is a project born out of necessity and was triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic. The tower will be built at Design Quarter on November 11.

Jaci Tibbit, Mrs African United Continent 2022, said, “In true South African spirit, people in various provinces embraced the project and started competing to build the biggest food tower.

“This created a competitive spirit and gave impetus to the endeavour to collect non-perishable food items for families in need. Since then, the project has continued to build momentum, and over the past three years, over 50 charity organizations have been assisted with food donations.”

She said this initiative does not only take place in Fourways but all over the country, “We make these food towers in different provinces and each tower gets its own name. This is to make it more unique. The naming process varies from each province, but we choose names from the heart, that speak about love, peace, and hope.”

She added: “The Gauteng tower, which will be the ‘Tower of Hope’. Currently, the title holders, the Design Quarter team are pulling out all the stops to keep the humanitarian trophy in the province by once again stacking the biggest tower. Shoppers are encouraged to donate wholeheartedly. Online station Fresh FM will broadcast live from the centre on the day to keep residents in the area updated on the tower’s progress.”

Tibbit is pleading with residents to donate food for the needy. She said the drop-off points are located outside Checkers and Clicks retail stores, during the centre’s trading hours, with both retailers having generously committed staff to help pack and process the donations.
