Guards cheer for the national rugby team in sign language

24/7 Security Services employees rally behind the Springboks without excluding the deaf community.

Gordon Serai and Themba Makobe who are security offers at Fourways Gardens Estate won the hearts of many adoring fans on social media. This comes as the duo were captured in a short video clip chanting ‘Go Bokke’ in sign language.

Serai and Makobe are employed at a security company that is also the biggest fan of the national rugby team. Therefore, the marketing and communications officer of 24/7 Security Services, Antoinette Nothling said they thought of switching things up a little and being inclusive.

Gordon Serai made Mzansi proud with their video showing support for the Springboks in sign language.

“The Good Things Guy article inspired us to create something to support the Bokke, SA Deaf Rugby’s initiative and Deaf Awareness. And as a bonus, we could help educate our staff and the general public. We post on social media every time they play,” said Nothling.

“We enlisted the help of two of our armed reaction officers – Gordon Serai and Themba Makobe at Fourways Gardens Estate – and created the video clip. Security is a tough industry, especially in South Africa, but our officers never hesitate to go the extra mile to help people. They are the heart of the company.”

Makobe echoed those sentiments, “I think it is important that we are all aware that sign language is now an official language. There are many people who use sign language as their only way of communicating – we should all learn some of the basics. You never know when you will need to help somebody.”

While Serai, on the other hand, said, “Very few people know sign language. We need to raise awareness and teach our children about it.”
