Learners have fun turning toilet rolls into art

Learning never stops for Junior College Gardens learners as they got creative during the school holidays.

Learners at Junior College Gardens in Fourways had fun while getting creative during the school holidays. The little ones engaged in a fun-filled holiday programme with various activities at their school’s premises.

The toilet rolls were turned into art décor by Junior College learners.

One of the activities was a rain stick craft which they created using cardboard tubes from toilet rolls.

Learners pick their favourite colours to get creative.

“They each decorated, and filled the cardboard tubes with rice, which we then sealed with plastic on each end. When tipped, the rice mimics the sound of falling rain,” said the school principal, Bianca Durrant.

Inathi Khumalo was wowed by his décor.

She said the main purpose of the day was to nurture the learning development of the little ones.

“Making a rain stick supports cognitive and sensory development. It sparks creativity and curiosity all while developing hand-eye coordination, auditory skills, as well as imagination and a sense of rhythm. This simple activity reinforces cause and effect, engaging children in a meaningful sensory experience.

Liam Sigamoney shows off his décor.

“Although we do not run our academic offerings during the holiday, the learning never ends. We ensure that even during the holidays, our little ones have fun with a variety of activities offered, which still promote all their learning areas and developmental milestones. Learning through play is equally important and essential.”
