Residents call for help in getting Norscot back to its glory

Stephen Margo from The Rotary Club in Fourways is asking for donations to help with the costs of running a fish pond at Norscot Manor Recreational Centre.

A few years ago, the residents of Norscot built a fishpond at their community recreational centre to make it look even more attractive. But the beauty of it is now slowly fading away as hunger strikes the Koi fish that residents love to watch during their visit to the centre.

That is why Stephen Margo from The Fourways Main Reef Rotary Club is doing everything he can to get them food and return the centre back to its glory days.

“This place was originally a massive farm which was subdivided and broken down after the Erikson [its owners] family passed on. The land was donated to the Johannesburg City Council which then turned it into a recreational centre. It is one of the very few open areas where community members can go in relative safety.”

Margo is asking for donations from residents in Fourways and the surrounding areas for the cost of running the pond that has about 30 Koi in it.

“We need on average, to service the filter once a month, check the quality of the water and that the fish are okay and they’ve got enough food inside.”

He said the fish are supposed to be fed every second or third day and the food is pricey, “You get a 20-kilogram bag for R660. So, we welcome any amount of money even if it is R30 because it helps us recover the cost of feeding the fish and looking after the pond which is now the feature of Norscot. When people come to Norscot, they stand around looking at the fish. There are two filters here, because of the size of the pond and the fountains have to work continuously and so do the inlets where it blows bubbles and erodes the water for the fish.”

Margo shared that anyone who wishes to contribute towards the costs of running the pond can contact him at 076 030 2342 or email: Steve_margo@global.co.za
